ART ISSUES PRESS and ART ISSUES RECORDS are the publishing imprints of the Foundation for Advanced Critical Studies (FACS), a nonprofit 501c3 arts organization. FACS was originally founded to publish Art issues. Magazine, whose first edition was released in Los Angeles in January 1989. The magazine quickly gained notoriety for a singular sensibility with pretensions too commercial for subculturati, too peculiar for public consumption, and too permissive for academic accolades. In its seventy editions, Art issues. regularly published creative nonfiction on often idiosyncratic topics alongside art reviews by over 100 writers on over 1,000 artists. In 1993, FACS opened its award-winning small book press. Early publications were supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Lannan Foundation, and numerous private foundations and individuals. In 2001, the magazine and book press ceased publishing new titles. In 2023, ART ISSUES PRESS released the 30th Anniversary Edition of its first book, Dave Hickey’s Invisible Dragon: Four Essays on Beauty. ART ISSUES RECORDS released concurrently an album of songs by the late author, Life As We Know It.
